Switching DC power supply, also known as switch-modes, and regulated linear DC supply are common techniques used to generate DC SMPS adapter in the design of control systems. An irregular linear DC supply is an option if the load is constant and can withstand a slight fluctuation in DC voltage due to variation in incoming AC supply. High switching power supply has gained popularity in the last 40 years due to high efficiency (> 80%) and small steps. Basically, the incoming AC to change the power supply takes the voltage and converts it to a high frequency 20- 500-kHz AC voltage which is then transported to a lower voltage using a smaller transformer. Then the voltage is fixed, filtered and regulated. When comparing linear supply, high efficiency reduces overproduction current and low output in short supply. Disadvantages of switch mode power supply include AC noise voltage, DC output, and residuals of electromagnetic interfaces (EMI) that are made by a switching transistor used in the circuit of supply. In almost all industrial applications, this unwanted electrical noise has little or no effect. General sensors and actuators are robust in design in terms of supply sensors by some SMPS adapter manufacturer. Some applications where unwanted noise can be affected by audio deo equipment, precision measuring devices and possibly some communication systems.
